Fall is the stressful time of year when MBA’s continue searching for a full-time job.  The search can be even more stressful for international students that need H-1B sponsorship.  MBA’s encounter many companies that ‘officially’ do not sponsor H-1B’s.  However, one of the best kept secrets is that a portion of those companies do “unofficially” sponsor H-1B’s.  The hard part is figuring out the difference between companies that say they don’t hire vs. companies that actually don’t hire.  Here is some help telling the difference between the two.

  1. Speak with your university career center.  Many times the career center will not disclose a list of companies that officially or unofficially hire international students, but it is the easiest path to try first.
  2. Reach out the leaders of your school’s International Business Club.  These students have a vested interest in knowing where international students can get hired.  Often the leaders of these clubs keep tabs on companies / positions in which they know recent hires have been sponsored regardless of what the official policy is.
  3. Check through the alumni database.  Search for people you know that were international students and look at where they are currently working.  Feel free to reach out to them about potential openings in their current company and also ask about other companies that match your interests.  Remember they have already been through the same job search process while filtering out non-sponsoring companies.

Finally, if you are really interested in a company that officially states (or hints) that they do not sponsor H-1B’s, read this article.  The article is based on a Wall Street Journal / Harris Interactive survey of corporate MBA recruiters.  It talks about the most common reasons that US employers have for not sponsoring and tips for getting around those concerns.
